Would You Hire a PPC Company That Was Breaking the Rules?

Just curious. I was contacted by a search company that was trying to sell me on managing paid search. I did some research online and found them triple serving serving (to promote their own site), violating the display URL policy and making false claims in their ad text. Needless to say I won't be working with them, but that's just me. Maybe those tactics are working for them and that's all they are concerned with.

How about you? Would you let a company manage your paid search when they clearly are ok with working outside the guidelines?

If you manage paid search for clients would you violate the program guidelines if it was producing the desired results?

As a ppc manager i find profitable opportunities to violate program guidelines from time to time. What prevents me from doing so is a base of morality and long term vision. Being "black hat" is enticing with its evil mystery and intrigue...But I'd would rather fight the good fight. By creating clear ads that link to crisp relevant landing pages, by hiding nothing from consumers and creating an atmosphere of transparency. The payoff - I feel i'm making the online world a better place for surfers of the future. It allows me to go to sleep at night with a peaceful heart. And oh yeah, the long term profits, from sowing seeds of trust and loyalty in new customers far outweigh any short term highs of wearing the black hat.

It happens at least once per month that one of our SEM competitors shows an ad on Google when you search for us. I email them asking them to stop, not because it's the law, but because SEM's need to lead by example.

[If that doesn't work after three emails, I then buy an ad for their CEO's name and that tends to get their attention]

No I wouldn't do it. I had someone that wanted me to randomly post in forums to get links, but I said no to that to. Some people don't want to be ethical and all they want are instant results. Just because this is the Internet doesn't mean that a person can cut corners. Yeah it may work for a short period, but after a while, people will find you out.
